Hiding dashcam cable guide Perodua Axia (DIY)

Routing and conceal dashcam power supply cable for Perodua Axia

Nowadays car dashcam portrayed as a very crucial security backup system that act as a prove of evidence in case of any accident and unforeseen circumstances to protect ourself from being blamed as guilty if own party is innocent.

There is hundreds of dashcams in the market pricing from less than a hundred up to few hundreds ringgit and some providing even more advance features and nicer specification.

While dashcam did come along with a small internal battery, however it does not last long for the whole recording session and normally external power source is required which the only power source available is from the 12V power socket from the front dashboard.

If the existing 12V power socket has been occupied for the dashcam then we are unable to utilise it for other purposes for example like charging our handphone if running out of battery during the most important time.

Installing the dashcam to the windscreen is pretty easy.

Someone could just attach the suction cup on it and insert the power supply cable but what about the cable hanging in the middle of the dashboard which will look pretty awkward and causing inconvenience for hand operation while driving.

So hiding the cable from general view cannot be neglected and it also can improve the tidyness around the dashboard.

But the important thing is that we should not be distracted or disturbed by the cable when driving or it may resulting in some serious accident just because of this simple item.

In this page here I will show how to route the cable and conceal it around my Perodua Axia Advance car shelf behind the cover and tap the power from fuse box inside the car cabin.

The car dashcam I chosen here is non other than the infamous Yi car dashcam from XiaoMi that I will introduce and review this device in a separate article together with other dashcam I own myself.

This dashcam seller did provide free installation but only grabbing the power source from existing 12V power socket and I did myself the another version tapping from the fuse box behind glove box.

I did myself this method of installation copying from my other car Proton Persona which also have a dashcam albeit different brand and that was installed by a certified installer as I did not wish to spend a hundred ringgit just for a simple wire tapping which I am able to do it all within my capability.

"So lets get on to it"

The first and foremost step is to find a perfect spot and fix on the location for the dashcam under the windscreen.

Advice is not too low that will blocking driver's view and not too high until half of the camera footage is covered by the upper black tinted (if the car is installed with).

But before this please get ready a fuse box tap connector and additional cigarette lighter socket from any car accessories shop.

I bought the fuse box tap connector from a small and old time car accessories shop in Bukit Mertajam for the cost of RM19.

Realise that this shop charge a premium then I head on to (( (please see below shift symbol on keyboard) accessories shop I mentioned on my previous article about adding simple accessories for Perodua Axia HERE.

The total cost added up is RM26.50 as the extra 50 cents is for the OEM female connector.

Joint all parts together and solder the wire which I prefer for more efficient current contact.

Then dismantle all covers and things that is potentially use to conceal and hiding power supply cable such as rubber door seal, A pillar inner cover and glove box.

Open the A pillar cover on the passenger side and not the driver side depending on the location of the fuse box by pulling out the front door seal.

Gently unplug the cover from the top side since the A pillar cover is just hold on by 3 clips but beware not to damage the clip by just using hand to gently pull down the cover.

Avoid using any hard tools that may cause the cover to crack.

Normally installer will hide and conceal the wire through the passenger side but my Proton Persona is in the opposite way as the fuse box is located just next above the gas pedal.

Next take out the front glove box by gently release the end stopper on the left side first and the proceed the same on the right side.

After that the fuse box will reveal itself just behind the glove box together with the aircond blower next to it.

Grab the provided power supply cable at the end of the dashcam plug portion and hide it in the small gap between the car ceiling fabric and windscreen.

Pull the cable starting from the point at rear view mirror where this the most common spot to fix a car dashcam until the A pillar.

Secure firmly the span of the cable throughout the entire A pillar by cable tie and slot in the remaining cable into under the dashboard.

Dress up the excess cable and insert the other end of the cable to the USB car charger which is also provided by the dashcam and then into the self DIY cigarette lighter socket.

Next connect the socket body wire to any point on the car chassis as every normal practice on car electrical wiring negative polarity is commonly attached to the car metal body part.

Finally use the self DIY fuse box tap connector and find a fuse slot on the existing fuse box to tap into in order to supply current to the car dashcam.

Car installer will just use any available slot but it is advisable to first check the manual from the car manufacturer before proceed or it may have tendency to cause damage other electrical components.

Below is the manual booklet supplied by Perodua when I bought the car and I tend to find the same slot providing electrical current to the existing 12V power socket which is slot no# 15 with fuse rating 15A.

I have failed myself in this final part as the connector requires 2 fuses to be able to function and the fuse tap connector I bought only comes with 1 fuse.

Presumed the connector need another fuse from the original fuse box to insert into it in order to function but the original fuse is different type low profile fuse.

I go out again to purchase another blade type fuse with the same rating 15A and at last all things is works perfectly.

Remember to lock and secure firmly the cigarette lighter socket rather than let it hanging around and re-check all the wire to hold on tightly so that it may not short circuit with other wire.

Attach back all the cover, door seal and glove box, clean up the car and dispose of any unused leftover rubbish remind us as a human to have a good habit in this society after every activity.

I have learned myself another important lesson and gained further knowledge throughout this task but the more important thing is from here I can protect not only my pocket but my beloved and humble car.

    1. Hi. I have no idea why G spec is different as per normal manufacturing all model should be installed with the same fuse box. Perhaps you may refer back to your manual and see if there is any slot indicating for "socket" and then you may proceed to use the slot
