Proton Persona clutch pump replacement

Clutch intermittently slip during depressing

What is clutch pump and how it looks like?
Do you ever wonder how clutch pedal will able to transfer pressure to the clutch plate inside drivetrain?
Is it by cable or hydraulic?

I thought the clutch inside our car is linked by a cable from the pedal to the actuator inside the engine but I was wrong. Not until my friend told me that I need to periodically check the fluid inside the reservoir to prevent from clutch misoperation which could cause a serious accident if not maintained properly.

Now it is about time as I feel that my clutch pump started to slip even though the clutch pedal is fully depressed. What happened is actually the actuator start to gradually engaging the clutch pressure plate as fluid leaks giving the similar occasion as clutch pedal was released gradually.

There was once I almost bumped onto the car in front and since then I have stopped driving this car and sort things out immediately. I was shocked to find that the clutch pump has started to leaking underneath dashboard behind the clutch pedal.

Without hesitation I immediately working to get all clutch pump replaced and the master clutch pump is located behind the firewall at the back of the air intake while the secondary can be found behind the radiator fan by tracing the rail from the master clutch pump.

First, remove the tray below the steering rack secured with 3 screws

Then, unhook a clip from the pin joining the pedal arm with clutch pump rod.

Remove the pin and set free the clutch pedal.

Dismantle all air intake component to maximise working space in the engine bay.

Detach the brake lines at the secondary pump.

Entire engine bay with air intake removed and clutch pump to be replace.

Disconnect the fluid hose from the reservoir to the clutch master pump.

Undo 2 nuts holding the master pump to the firewall.

Remove a clip securing the rail to the master pump.

Undo another 2 screws holding secondary pump to the engine body.

Take out the old pump and replace with new pump.

Remember to refill brake oil and perform brake fluid bleeding to remove all air inside the clutch pump system.

How it looks like and look how dirty after clutch pump used for the past 15 years.

Frankly speaking, this is a very easy job actually and one may just need to understand the technique for brake fluid bleeding procedure to restore the clutch function. All these take no longer than 1 hour if done correctly.
